For Broken Ears (2020) — EP

Tems' debut EP introduced her haunting alto voice and confessional songwriting — the project that started a generational career.

Released on September 25, 2020, For Broken Ears is the debut EP from Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems. The seven-track project showcased her distinctive alto voice and introspective songwriting style that would soon captivate the world.

Highlights include the breakthrough single Damages, Try Me (her commercial debut), Higher, and The Key. The EP blends alternative R&B, soul, and Afrobeats in a way that felt entirely new for African pop.

For Broken Ears established Tems as one of the most distinctive voices in modern music. Higher was later sampled by Future on the global hit Wait for U with Drake, which won Tems a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance — making her the first female artist from Africa to win in that category.
